Craps History
Beginning Strategies for Playing Craps
The origin of Craps has been lively discussed over the years. It's agreed that a game called Hazard is the basis for Craps, but where Hazard comes from originally is unclear. Some say it was imported to Europe by Arabic people. Others claim it was invented as a pastime when Sir William of Tyre and his troops took the castle Hazarth under siege in the year 1125.
Hazard gained great popularity in England but the name Craps actually comes from France. In Hazard the term "crabs" were used when the dice showed a 2. After the game had reached France the name was in time altered to Craps. French settlers brought the game to America in the early 1700's and in 1813 a man called Bernard de Mandeville changed it to be even more like the Craps game we know and play today.
The game spread across the country and in 1907 a man in New York, John H. Winn, invented the modern Craps layout. Winn was a professional dice maker and is often referred to as "the father of modern Craps".
Today, Craps is one of the most popular casino games and a lot of players still gather around the tables where the dice are thrown.
